Bible study 16 – Genesis 16Posted: October 18, 2016
Since Abram’s wife Sarai can’t have children, she asks Abram to sleep with her slave Hagar. Hagar promptly becomes pregnant, but when she “looks with contempt” on Sarai, Sarai becomes angry and blames everything on Abram. Abram is apparently indifferent to the whole affair, and tells Sarai to do whatever she wants to her slave (who is, remember, carrying his child). Sarai beats up Hagar, who runs away. But God feels (quite correctly) sorry for her, and tells her to go back to Abram, where she gives birth to Ishmael, who God predicts will become a “wild ass of a man”.
