Bible study 122 – Numbers 5

Unclean people are ordered to dwell outside the main camp.

Next, men who suspect their wives of adultery should take them to the priest for a trial by ordeal. The wife is forced to drink holy water containing dust and ink, in front of a priest. If she is innocent, nothing will happen; if she is guilty, the water will cause great pain and destroy her fertility. I don’t think a little dust and ink could cause this, but for believers the ritual was perhaps enough to make them confess. Also, the husband has nothing to lose by accusing his wife of adultery: “The man shall be free from iniquity, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.”

Numbers 5:22
“(…) now may this water that brings the curse enter your bowels and make your womb discharge, your uterus drop!” And the woman shall say, “Amen. Amen.”
