Bible study 195 – Joshua 9

The people of the nearby city of Gibeon hear that the Israelites plan on exterminating the entire population of Canaan, and therefore come up with a ruse: they dress themselves in old clothes, and pretend to have traveled from a far-away place to swear allegiance to Israel’s God. The Israelite leaders promise not to hurt them (in accordance with Deuteronomy 20), and even reaffirm this hesitatingly when the ruse is discovered.

Joshua 9:21
The leaders said to them, “Let them live.” So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the leaders had decided concerning them.
